Brief History of the Town of Suchitoto

Suchitoto, located 47 kilometers from the capital city, is a must-see destination during your visit to El Salvador. This colonial city houses invaluable cultural and historical wealth, which blends with nature and its imposing views.

It is a colonial town of great historical and cultural importance in El Salvador, being the site where the first European city in Mesoamerica was established in 1525.

Its name in Nahuatl means "place of birds and flowers." It served as the site of the country's first capital in 1528. The city is known for its well-preserved architecture, featuring cobblestone streets, tile roofs, balconies, and picturesque houses.

History of Suchitlán Lake

Suchitlán Lake is located about 78 kilometers from San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. It was formed after the creation of the Cerrón Grande Hydroelectric Plant on the Lempa River bed. The final part of the reservoir, specifically located between the three municipalities of Potonico (Chalatenango) and Jutiapa (Cabañas), is home to a 90-meter-high dam, 800 meters in length, with a concrete spillway of 4 gates and a surface powerhouse where electricity is produced through water discharges.

This is an artificial reserve and was declared a RAMSAR site of El Salvador on November 22, 2005. Around 144 tree species and several species of submerged or floating aquatic plants that grow on the shores have been recorded here. It is also the habitat for 12 species of fish, 23 species of mammals, 48 species of reptiles, and 18 species of amphibians.

History of Ilopango Lake

Ilopango Lake is a lake of volcanic origin located in El Salvador, formed within a volcanic caldera. The caldera originated from a large explosive eruption between 57,000 and 72,000 years ago. The last significant eruption created the Islas Quemadas dome in 1879–1880.

The lake was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption that occurred about 1,500 years ago. The eruption was so massive that it created a caldera, which eventually filled with water to form the lake. The caldera has a diameter of about 8 kilometers (5 miles) and is surrounded by steep slopes.
