Brief History of the Destinations

History of El Boquerón National Park

Located just one hour from the San Salvador Airport, the San Salvador Volcano is one of the most prominent volcanoes in El Salvador. Its history dates back to the pre-Columbian era when it was considered a sacred site by the indigenous civilizations inhabiting the region. The name "Boquerón" is derived from the Spanish word for "big mouth" or "large hole," referring to the massive opening at the volcano's summit.

In 1917, it was declared a national park to preserve its natural beauty and geological significance.

The park offers a unique experience for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Guided tours led by local experts provide detailed information about the area's geology, flora, and fauna.

You can explore trails surrounded by lush vegetation, observe the impressive geological formation of the volcanic crater, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. The park features viewpoints, birdwatching and nature observation posts, rest areas, and tourist information centers. One of the main attractions is the crater itself, which measures approximately 1,600 meters in diameter and 558 meters in depth.

The best time to visit El Boquerón National Park is during the dry season (November to April), which offers the clearest views. The climate remains cool and temperate year-round, ranging from 18°C to 22°C during the day, while in December, temperatures can drop to 8°C at night.

The rainy season (May to October) can bring fog and rain, which may affect the visibility, though the park remains open for visitors all year long.
