History of the Municipality of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in the Department of Sonsonate and its Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture announced the recognition and declaration of the traditional artisanal techniques of red clay pottery in the municipality of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Sonsonate, as a Cultural Property.

The research to finalize the declaration of pottery as a Cultural Property was conducted by the General Directorate of Cultural and Natural Heritage through the Directorate of Intangible Cultural Heritage (PCI), which took into account the characteristics, history, and techniques of this type of craftsmanship.

To make the declaration, it was considered that its creation is primarily done by hand using simple technology, and that "the techniques and knowledge have been passed down from generation to generation since pre-Hispanic times, through oral tradition in artisanal workshops involving the entire family.

This provides social cohesion and local identity, as it is generally the grandmothers who teach the trade to children through simple tasks." This trade and tradition continue to be passed down, as stated by Ms. Mayra García, a member of a local artisan family and part of the KAN TEKITI SUKIT NE GEMELOS Workshop, which in English means "The Twins Clay Work Workshop."

In these red clay pottery workshops, artisans carry out the process of creating comales, pots, kitchen utensils, crafts, and other products. Tourists can also visit to live their own experience or simply observe the production and process.

l Escuco Waterfall - History - Source of Health and Eternal Youth

El Escuco Waterfall: Between Myths and Community Tourism The history of El Escuco Waterfall, located in Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Sonsonate, El Salvador, dates back to the pre-Columbian era, with evidence of indigenous ceremonies and the belief in its waters as a "source of health and eternal youth." The name "El Escuco" means "falling water" in Nahuatl, and the waterfall is a popular tourist spot due to its imposing 80-meter drop and its natural surroundings.

It offers an enchanting journey through green areas, fruit trees, and cattle grazing amidst the vegetation. The walking tour to the waterfall takes approximately 35 minutes, departing from Santo Domingo. By car, it is a 5-minute drive, and any type of vehicle can reach the site.

Santo Domingo, like the waterfall, holds legends and stories from the elders. Locals claim that in the past, indigenous ceremonies were held at the waterfall as offerings to the water. "The ancestors believed that the water from the waterfall healed the body and soul; they said that in one of its caves, the water of eternal youth can be found, along with a large pyramidal stone used for meditation."

Additionally, there are testimonies from locals speaking of the appearance of the "Siguanaba" near the waterfall. "They say she appears at dawn, combing her hair on the large stone. Some have seen her, others only hear her laughter, but it is when there is no moon, in the darkness of the night, when the waterfall seems quietest."

Regardless of urban legends, we witnessed the natural beauty and the existing cultural roots; once you reach the falling water, it generates peace and a soft breeze that refreshes every visitor.

The bowls of Sopa de Gallina India (local free-range chicken soup) and charcoal-grilled chicken are the local gastronomy of the area. For local vendors, it is the best place in the country where this dish is prepared, and they trust that, over the years, they will keep this tradition alive.

The gastronomy of the town of Caluco maintains the traditional style, as all food is cooked over charcoal. Furthermore, they add everything to the chicken soup: vegetables, mint, and cilantro, which gives it a distinct flavor. The soup is served with a piece of chicken, tortillas, cuajada (fresh curd cheese), rice, salads, and natural fruit drinks, adding a dose of love to make the flavor exquisite, traditional, and affordable for all visitors.

In essence, Sopa de Gallina India is a fusion of tradition. Its roots date back to the colonial era, resulting from the mixture of ingredients and culinary techniques from different cultures, including indigenous, European, and African.
