What does "Las Ruinas del Tazumal" mean?
It was the setting for an important and sophisticated Mayan settlement that existed between 100 and 1200 AD. After a long occupation, the site was abandoned around 1200 AD and is now a treasure filled with history.
El Tazumal Archaeological Site:
Located in the heart of Chalchuapa, it features a series of structures that were part of a sophisticated Mayan settlement, including a water drainage system, tombs, pyramids, temples, and a ball court.
Casa Blanca Archaeological Park: This is an archaeological site rich in history located in the Municipality of Chalchuapa, considered one of the oldest indigenous settlements, with the highest number of mounds located in the Southern Mayan periphery within Salvadoran territory.
Casa Blanca offers rural, cultural, and nature tourism. It also features a museum displaying archaeological pieces found in the area to preserve and showcase its history.
At Casa Blanca, you will find the traditional plant called jiquilite, where classes on different blue-dyeing methods and materials are taught. The workshop produces and offers shirts, purses, and other blue-dyed products.
