What to do in the Historic Center of San Salvador

San Salvador is the heart of El Salvador, where you can immerse yourself in the country's rich culture and history. Start your tour at the Metropolitan Cathedral, where Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero rests. Right next door, explore the National Palace and its impressive neoclassical architecture—an iconic building that reflects Salvadoran history. Visit Libertad Park and the National Theater, ideal for capturing the city's vibrant cultural and architectural life. Additionally, discover the National Library (BINAES), where you can enjoy exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs.

Alongside, you will find the Central American Garden, which features an installation of 14 flags representing the countries of Central America and the Caribbean. These flags wave with pride, symbolizing solidarity and brotherhood among nations while adding a colorful and meaningful touch to the space.

This modern urban corner has been transformed into an essential destination for both locals and travelers. It is also an example of how urban planning can revitalize a city.

The space features 172 trees, creating a green lung in the middle of the urban bustle. These trees not only beautify the landscape but also provide shade and improve air quality, making the plaza a fresh and pleasant place to relax.

The plaza's design includes geometric planters that bring a touch of modernity and order to the space. It is complemented by the imposing National Library of El Salvador, the National Palace, and other cultural jewels of the country, as well as a wide variety of cafés and restaurants located in the area.

Whether for a relaxing stroll, an afternoon with friends, or simply to admire the beauty of the site, the Central American Garden is undoubtedly a gem in the heart of San Salvador.

You can also visit restaurants that offer a unique culinary experience with typical dishes and exquisite gastronomy. Additionally, you can visit the Interactive Artisanal Development Center (Cedart), which has three floors: the first dedicated to protecting cultural heritage, a hall of fame for all national craftsmanship awards presented annually, a bistro café, and private exhibition and design rooms. This entire space serves as a showcase for national crafts, acting as a shop for artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs where you can purchase beautiful souvenirs made by hand at a good price—carrying with them a piece of the identity of our country's colorful towns.

Thus, the Historic Center is the starting point for any adventure and a place to live multiple experiences. You will find a diversity of options for lodging, food, recreation, information, business opportunities, and a cultural agenda.

When visiting the Historic Center of San Salvador, you will be transported to different eras as you find historic buildings, colonial architecture, renovated plazas, and restored properties aimed at preserving cultural heritage, offering a unique experience that you must live when visiting the heart of El Salvador.
If we dive into religious tourism, we invite you to visit the El Rosario and El Calvario churches, two significant and historic churches in San Salvador. El Calvario Church has roots dating back to 1660, with a building constructed between 1925 and 1950. El Rosario Church, on the other hand, is an example of modern architecture, built between 1964 and 1971, with an innovative and unique design for the region.

We offer group tours for any date the traveler wishes to go. Prices are based on the number of people taking the tour. We also provide scheduled or private tours to any tourist destination in El Salvador; we invite you to visit our pages for more information.
